In a recent nationwide survey conducted by Ipsos Pakistan, the Pakistan Army has emerged as the most trusted institution in the country, with a remarkable 74 percent approval rating. The survey, titled ‘Political Participation Landscape of Pakistani Youth’, was conducted for Voice of America (VOA) in January 2024 and involved 2,050 respondents aged 18-34 from across Pakistan.
The survey reveals that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is the least trusted institution among the eight institutions included in the study. This finding highlights the significance of trust and confidence in the electoral process, which plays a crucial role in a democratic society.
While the Pakistan Army takes the top spot, the Supreme Court of Pakistan follows closely behind with a respectable approval rating of 58 percent. The media secures the third position, with political parties trailing behind with a 50 percent approval rating.
Interestingly, the survey also sheds light on the sentiments surrounding the upcoming elections. A significant 75 percent of respondents believe that elections will steer the country in the right direction, indicating a positive outlook towards the democratic process. Furthermore, 66 percent of respondents expect the elections to be free and fair, highlighting the importance of transparency and fairness in the electoral system.
It is encouraging to note that 88 percent of the respondents believe that their vote holds importance, emphasizing the value of individual participation in shaping the future of the nation. This statistic showcases the awareness and responsibility felt by the Pakistani youth towards their civic duty.
However, the survey also reveals that Pakistani youth are not highly engaged in politics. Only 54 percent of respondents stay informed about politics, candidates, and manifestos in their constituency. Additionally, a mere 29 percent express support for politicians and political parties, indicating a lack of enthusiasm for participating in rallies and processions.
While the trust placed in the Pakistan Army is commendable, it is essential to foster a broader sense of political engagement among the youth. Encouraging active participation in the democratic process, such as staying informed about political developments and actively supporting political candidates, can help strengthen the democratic fabric of the nation.
The survey’s findings highlight the importance of trust, transparency, and civic engagement in Pakistan’s political landscape. As the most trusted institution, the Pakistan Army has a significant role to play in maintaining this trust and ensuring a fair and inclusive democratic process. It is equally crucial for other institutions, such as the Election Commission of Pakistan, to address the concerns that have led to their lower levels of trust.
Ultimately, a robust and trusted democratic system is built on the active participation and trust of its citizens. It is through collective efforts that Pakistan can continue to progress and thrive as a democratic nation.
